Women in Construction

Designing Spaces, Changing the Industry

International Women’s Day may have passed this week, but it still feels like the perfect moment to pause and celebrate the women working across the design and construction industries.

Interior design sits in an interesting place between creativity and construction. One minute we are talking colour palettes and fabrics, the next we are on site discussing electrics, floor levels or how a kitchen wall might need moving. It is a world where creativity meets practicality every single day.

Historically, construction has been a very male-dominated industry. If you walk onto most building sites, that is still often the case. But over the last decade there has been a quiet shift happening. More women are entering architecture, project management, interior design, site management and the skilled trades.

And honestly, the industry is better for it.

At Stylesmith Interiors, we work closely with architects, developers, builders and craftspeople across Harrogate, York, Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. Some of the best projects come together when a team brings different perspectives, skills and experiences to the table.

Interior design often acts as the bridge between the build and the people who will actually live in the space. It is about understanding how a home should feel as well as how it should function. That might mean planning a kitchen layout that works for busy family life, creating calm bedrooms, or designing spaces that make hosting friends feel easy.

Running an interior design business within the construction industry is something we are incredibly proud of. There is something very rewarding about being involved in a project from early design conversations all the way through to the moment the final cushions are placed and the homeowner walks in.

One of the best parts of the job is collaboration. On recent projects in Harrogate town centre and across North Yorkshire we have worked alongside brilliant architects, talented builders, kitchen makers and joiners. These partnerships are what turn ideas into real spaces.

And while construction may still be catching up in terms of gender balance, there are more and more women shaping the industry every year. Designers, architects, quantity surveyors, planners, tradespeople, project managers. Women bringing creativity, organisation, empathy and problem solving to projects large and small.

Interior design itself has also evolved hugely. It is not just about styling a finished room. Today it often means being involved much earlier in the process. Developing layouts, specifying materials, coordinating with the build team and helping clients make hundreds of small decisions that ultimately shape the home.

It is detailed work, sometimes messy, occasionally chaotic, but always rewarding.

So even if International Women’s Day slipped past the calendar this week, it still feels worth celebrating the women working across design and construction here in Yorkshire and beyond.

Because great homes are rarely the result of just one person’s vision. They are the result of collaboration, creativity and a whole team of people bringing their skills together.

And increasingly, that team includes more and more talented women.
